Your Business Is a Chessboard

Author : Prashant Chavan

Have you ever looked at your business like a chessboard?

A chessboard has different pieces, and each has a specific role, strength, limitation, and way of moving. A business is no different. Growth depends not on one powerful individual, but on how well every piece works together.

King = Business Owner

The King is the most important piece, but also one of the most restricted. He can move only one step at a time.

A business owner is much the same. The owner carries the ultimate responsibility and must protect the business from every major threat. But the owner cannot personally make every move. His role is to make the right strategic decisions, protect the business, and keep it moving in the right direction.

Queen = General Manager

The Queen is the most powerful and versatile piece on the board. She can move in almost every direction and cover large distances.

The General Manager plays a similar role. They coordinate people, departments, resources, operations, and decisions, moving across the organisation to keep everything aligned with the owner's strategy.

Rook / Elephant = Systems & Operations (Sr. team)

The Rook moves straight, with clarity and direction.

It represents business functions that depend on structure and discipline operations, finance, production, logistics, technology, and systems. They create stability and keep the business moving efficiently.

Bishop / Camel = Brand & Marketing (Agency)

The Bishop moves diagonally.

Brand and marketing often work the same way. They connect different parts of the business product, customer, sales, communication, positioning, and reputation. Marketing does not operate in isolation; it moves across the business.

Knight / Horse = Innovation (R&D)

The Knight is different from every other piece. It moves in an unexpected pattern and can jump over other pieces.

That represents innovation finding opportunities, creating new approaches, challenging conventional thinking, and making moves competitors may not anticipate.

Pawns = People & Execution (Jr. team)

Pawns may appear to be the smallest pieces, but they are essential to the game.

They represent the people who execute the strategy every day sales, customer service, production, marketing, design, technology, and delivery teams.

A pawn may have limited movement, but reaching the other side of the board can transform its value.

The lesson is simple:

No single chess piece wins the game.

A great business owner cannot succeed without capable people. A strong manager cannot compensate for poor systems. Great marketing cannot fix a weak product. Innovation cannot survive without execution.

Business growth is not about having the most powerful piece.

It is about moving the right piece, at the right time, in the right direction, with every other piece working towards the same objective.

That is how you win the game.
